Zaragoza, as a geographic and encounter centre within the hexagon composed by Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Bilbao, is a neuralgic point in the European Southeast. It is located in the centre of an area which, within a radius of 350 kilometres, gathers 60% of the Spanish population and 80% of its GIP.
The city is located 240 metres high on the sea level, on the right margin of the Ebro mid Valley, and there, in addition to the Ebro, the rivers Gallego and Huerva, as well as the Canal Imperial de Aragon join together. Its population is 601,674 inhabitants, according to the Census of 1996, and it is, according to these data, the fifth city in Spain.
Zaragoza is a capital city and a political-administrative centre in the Comunidad Autonoma de Aragon, one of the 17 autonomies that compose the Spanish State and counts on a total surface of 47,650 square kilometres, 9′44% of the national territory. The municipality has 1,059�9 square kilometres and is, therefore, one of the largest in Spain.
By highway, Zaragoza is communicated with the national network and the European one, through the axis between the Ebro and the Mediterranean and Atlantic highways, and through the central passage in Somport, with the forthcoming execution of the North-South axis.
Also, by its strategic location within the Iberian Peninsula and its cultural and linguistic bonds, Zaragoza is a junction point between Hispano-America and Europe.
